About Me

Aria DeMaris

Like many kids growing up, I've always been a bit of a chameleon, taking on the energy of people around me and soaking up sounds, behaviors and voices. I loved playing the parrot, and as a little one, I was constantly put on the spot by family and friends to impersonate different characters, movements, and voices. My ear for languages, as well as my knowledge and love of music and cultures, sparked my passion for dialects which came years later. That spark became a fire when studying a non regional Mexican dialect and I later started working as an apprentice to renowned dialect coach, Doug Abrahams (Elysium, The Company You Keep, Merlin's Apprentice).

Motivated to learn more, I gradually started to enhance my proficiency in various dialects, as I was fascinated by the origin of language and specifically different accents. As my appreciation for the study of the history and development of diverse accents and languages grew, my interest in coaching emerged naturally. Ever since my very first coaching experience, I was hooked! Now I actively continue to train and build my knowledge of phonetics, voice acting and resonance which has taken me to different countries where I am happily increasing my expertise and adding some new dialects to my list.

Recent Coaching Work: Rachel Hunter on "Her Infidelity", Cailean Connolly on "The Man in the High Castle" and Emma Sutton on "Valentines Again."

Dialect Coaching

Dialect Coaching

Being able to instill confidence in a person and free them from doubt, is one of the best feelings. I believe being a coach is more than simply "coaching." It's about supporting and guiding someone towards their goal and allowing their focus to settle on the imaginative process rather than the dialect. This gives them the freedom to find the voice and accent of the character in their given circumstances and bring them to life. Accents add to the life and story of a character and I'm here to guide you by giving you the basis you need to understand the important principles listed below. I always work happily to accommodate various learning styles and techniques of teaching, since not everyone learns the same way. Figuring out how a person learns and retains information is just another exciting aspect of being a dialect coach that I enjoy, and it allows me to tailor a style to suit that individual. When achieving an authentic sounding dialect, its important to understand the right musicality of the language, vowels and consonants, the pitch, and the placement of the tongue.

You will learn:

  • Pitch
  • Rhythm
  • Vowel Changes
  • Consonant Changes
  • Specific Pronunciations
Accent Reduction

Accent Reduction

As a dialect coach, I find foreign accents to be so musical, unique and beautiful to the ear. For others living in such a cosmopolitan city, the presence of a foreign accent can be an obstacle and at times frustrating when it comes to communicating efficiently since English is the commonly spoken language. Whether it is to achieve a more comfortable presence in the acting or business world, or simply for your self assurance, I can help you reduce your native dialect and feel comfortable with a more readily understandable English dialect. Working together I can help teach you with phonetics, the different consonant qualities and sounds, pure vowel sounds, as well as consonant and vowel combinations. Additionally we can focus on grammatical and sentence structure errors or any other issues you may have, and feel you would like to correct, in order to help you feel more confident with your own speech pattern.

You will learn:

  • Consonant Sounds
  • Vowel Sounds
  • Consonant and Vowel Combinations
  • Grammatical and Sentence Structure

Some Sweet Words

Doug Abrahams - Professional Actor and Dialect Coach

“Aria has proven to be one of the most dedicated students I have had the pleasure of instructing over many years in this field. I met Aria when she took a course I was teaching through the Actor’s Union in Vancouver, Canada. Her diligence and eagerness to learn made her stand out in every aspect of her studies as she always took that extra step to ensure her work was completed to the best of her abilities. Her communication skills were top notch as was her ability to work with others in groups and in pairs. Exceptionally well prepared, she asked very intelligent questions and took great care in recording her studies and findings. Confident in her abilities, and after completing her courses with me, I have had Aria both assist me and fill in for me on numerous occasions and she has proven herself to be a very capable dialect coach.”
